National Honey-buzzard Survey 2020-2021

Fieldwork completed in SW of Study Area for 2021: 27/06-02/09

  1. Allen, Staward N

    1. 27/06/21: male gliding into site, perched briefly on top of tree, 4 sample stills 1  2  3  4, watch: 14:00-18:00.

    2. 20/08/21: a brown juvenile Honey-buzzard flying low through the canopy 1 , watch: 12:25-17:00.

  2. Allen, Staward S

    1. 27/06/21: male soaring very high over site, 1 sample still 1 , watch: 14:00-18:00.

    2. 20/08/21: adult male seen to come out of a tall conifer and do a short tight circuit through the top of the trees, normally a sign that young are on the branches below, watch: 12:25-17:00.

    3. 02/09/21: a juvenile Honey-buzzard up 1; watch 13:50-16:45

  3. Upper South Tyne, Softley

    1. 01/07/21: female (thought to be 3cy) over field near site, 2 sample stills 1  2, watch 15:05-18:15

    2. 25/08/21: family group of 4 (male 1, female, older juvenile 2  3  4, younger juvenile 5  6  7  8) high up in the air, watch: 14:45-17:45

  4. Upper South Tyne, Lambley

    1. 01/07/21: male over area in contention with Common Buzzard, 4 sample stills 1  2  3  4, watch 15:05-18:15

    2. 25/08/21: family group of 3 (adult male, adult female 1, 1 juvenile 2  3) was low down, watch: 14:45-17:45

  5. Lower South Tyne, Greenshaw Plain

    1. 08/07/21: female in, followed by male out, 1 sample still female 1, watch 15:45-17:55

    2. 23/08/21: juvenile floating around over top of canopy gaining height very slowly, sample stills 1  2  3  4, briefly joined by male, second juvenile climbed very weakly above the canopy before quickly sinking back again, watch 15:15-17:50

  6. Lower South Tyne, Allerwash

    1. 08/07/21: male out from site, 1 sample still 1 , watch 15:45-17:55

    2. 23/08/21:none seen, watch 15:15-17:50

  7. Upper South Tyne, Barhaugh

    1. 15/07/21: male moved towards site but backed off, 1 sample still 1 , female flying around close to nesting area, male gliding into site clip and 4 derived stills 1  2  3  4 , watch 14:05-18:20.

    2. 28/08/21: the male high up with the female in follow-me display 1  2, 2 juvenile lower down closer to the trees 3 4; later the juvenile did go a little higher under encouragement from the parents, watch 11:50-17:55

  8. Allen, Oakpool,

    1. 10/08/21: pair up at 13:42 with male diving at female 1 and male up on own 2  3, watch 11:55-15:20

    2. 02/09/21: a family party of 4 up in the air in classical fashion: male up high, female at moderate height and 2 juvenile at low-level 1  2  3  4, struggling to stay afloat, watch 13:50-16:45

  9. Upper South Tyne, North Wood, Haltwhistle,

    1. 24/07/21: female seen soaring effortlessly and deliberately from a conifer plantation to W to moderate height 1  2  3 before floating off N to forage. She was accompanied by a male Hobby 4, watch 13:35-17:40.

    2. 01/09/21: family party of 4 seen, the male 1  2  3 and strong-flying juvenile first, with the female next 4  5  6  7 and finally the weak-flying juvenile 8  9  10  11, watch 15:55-17:25.

  10. Allen, Sinderhope N

    1. 05/08/2021: a female out briefly circling the nesting area 1, maybe looking for mate, watch 14:00-15:30.

    2. 14/08/21: saw both partners in the pair with the female doing a quick circuit around the nesting area and the male arriving shortly after from the moors to the NE with food 1  2  3  4, watch 10:40-13:10

  11. Upper South Tyne, Barhaugh Crags

    1. 15/07/21: none seen, watch: 13:20-14:05.

    2. 28/08/21: from Gilderdale Bridge picked up a juvenile to the S of Barhaugh Crags and from Barhaugh Hall picked up another juvenile coming off the moor to E (feeding habitat 1) and slowly moving towards the Crags 2  3  4  5, watch 11:50-17:55

  12. Allen, Parkhead Fell

    1. 27/06/21: at 14:55 a male was floating over the moors to the W 1  2  3, watch 14:00-18:00.

    2. 02/09/21: a male up on edge of moor, watch: 13:50-16:45.

  13. Allen, Beacon Hill

    1. 10/08/21: a male foraging over moor 1  2, watch: 11:55-15:20.

    2. 25/08/21: a male coming out of a plantation, disappearing onto the ground in a dip and not being seen again, watch: 13:50-14:35.
