Timing of Honey Buzzard Movement in Benelux from 13-14 September 2008 on Trektellen

These timings and volume are taken from Trektellen, the former being obtained by clicking on the circle on the map, which also gives the other birds recorded in the watch, including Common Buzzard. The timings here are CEST which is BST+1, for example 16:30 in Benelux is 15:30 in England. The timings reported are those for the whole watch, except where a comment indicates the actual times at which the birds moved. On 13th the grand total compiled of 894 is slightly less than the 981 reported for the whole day on Trektellen. While all records on or near the coast were examined in detail, some low counts further inland near clusters with large counts were ignored. The same applies to the 14th where the grand total compiled of 783 can be compared with 862 reported for the whole day on Trektellen.

In the tables below, column 1 is the locality, column 2 the number recorded together with any information on direction and age, column 3 the time at which movement of Honey Buzzard occurred – the whole watch period or a more specific period if the comments allow this to be defined, and column 4 the numbers of Common Buzzard recorded. Column 5 holds notes taken mainly from the reports on Trektellen but there are also contributions from the Internet. Such notes have been translated from Dutch or French using Google. The resulting translations have not been tidied up, except where it is very obvious what changes should be made. If in doubt the reader is referred to the original writing in Dutch or French on Trektellen or on the Internet. Some entry is made for all counts of ten or more, even if only to indicate that no comment was made by the reporters.

Falsterbo in the dunes![Trektellen]

15 Sept., 2008 [reporting on events of 13/9/2008]
Telpost Parnassia: never so many migratory birds of prey in one day

Since 1953 count members of the South Vogelwerkgroep Kennemerland migratory birds in a dune on the coast in the Kennemerduinen. This telpost Parnassia telpost is the oldest in the country. Last Saturday, a record number of birds of prey counted. A total of 209 birds of prey were seen as a climax with 5 ospreys.

It is normal that many birds of prey east wind along the coast to be seen. Now this draft took place right at the beginning of the east wind period. Probably the raptors have long waited for favourable wind and they are massively at the first dead wind on the wings gone. The counters that Saturday at the telpost were seen following the draw on birds of prey: 5 ospreys, 34 Wasps Thieves, 70 Harrier Brown, 16 Sperwer, 13 buzzards, 9 Tower Falcons, 2 Boom Falcons and 1 Peregrine Falcon.

The timers were all perplexed by. On the website trektellen.nl, where birdwatchers from all over Western Europe telgegevens their track, it appears that almost nothing has been hungry bird of prey as much as in South Kennemerland. In the continuing east winds will telpost in Parnassia regularly occupied.

From http://www.ketelbrug.nl/Dagboek%202008/pagina_dagboek_2008.htm

Record counts often seem not long stand. At the migration So it was still definitely not low daily record of the Marsh Harrier of 65 ex. four days ago already broken again with 23 copies. The daily record of the Honey Buzzard was already slightly longer (13 ex. On September 16, 2006), but was largely improved today. Of the 146 counted 125 Honey Buzzards are passed between eleven and twelve o'clock. ... There were high numbers today Lapwings, Buzzards and Ospreys (ex 5). A striking feature of the swallows was that three quarters of the birds flew to the north.

The expectations are high, but the numbers are still a bit disappointing. It is also striking that most of the birds to the north and not, as you might expect, fly south. The best observations are formed by a low flying sea male hen harrier and across the coastal strip flying cuckoo. From half past nine the raptors are going. To eleven hours passing through sixteen sparrow hawks, two kestrels, a hawk, four buzzards, 10 brown harriers and a honey buzzard. Much less than in the example of sites Berkheide en de Vulkaan. Apparently choose many birds of prey in their journey south for the inner edge. At eleven we call it a day. From blog VogelPunt at
