Southward Movement in Britain

The pager records (were at http://www.birdguides.com , not available now) indicate a pronounced southward direction to the flight of the Honey Buzzards. For instance on 23rd September, for records of 93 birds, where the direction of flight was explicitly noted: 58 flew S, 9 SW, 7 SE, 12 W, 5 E and 2 N. Records giving direction as 'over' have not been included, including 18 in Leicestershire. It is a quick count but 80% are moving between SW and SE and only about 13% are moving W. A number of the latter were seen near roosting times in south-east England so the direction may not have been that followed in the main migratory push.
