Autumn Raptor Migration at Malta
Environmental Aspects of Autumn Raptor Migration at Buskett Nature Reserve, published 8-Sep-2000.
Abstract May 1999, S. Gatt, University of Malta.
Interesting points:
- Majority of species seen were those capable of sustained flapping flight over large bodies of water.
- The Maltese Islands are 96km south of Sicily and 290km north of the Libyan coast. See
Birding in Malta.
- Raptor passage positively correlated with atmospheric pressure.
- Raptor passage negatively correlated with wind speed.
- Raptor passage: no correlation shown with wind direction (except Marsh Harrier Circus aeroginosus).
- Soaring and gliding flight positively correlated with temperature.
- Flapping flight positively correlated with wind speed.
- Wind speed affects (reduces) altitude of flight.
- Majority of Honey Buzzards Pernis apivorus fly parallel to coast.
- Roosting occurs in woodlands in late afternoon.
