A male Honey-buzzard was picked up over a very private wood on SE side of Little Haldon at 11:12; he was up at moderate height over the wood as if he had just soared up from the site; after a bit of hesitation he flew off SW towards the woods on S side of Golf Club House.

hot, strong sunshine, light N breeze Very private indeed - walked towards it along footpath over E area of Haldon, which came to shuddering halt near the wood; went downhill to near the farm where footpath sign removed and part of stile missing; walked again towards wood and crossed through series of 'difficult' gates and scruffy glades with sounds of shouting behind; galloped up hill and looked back to see GK's vehicle finally through last obstacle; I merged into copse at top with no further contact; moved onto public lane above copse and strolled out! Well what have they got to hide! Y

Not too surprised to have Honey-buzzard male at same place as yesterday, up over ridge between Little Haldon and Holcombe Down at 14:25 at moderate height, then coming down a little and drifting off E towards Down itself. So this site looks pretty active!

Here had to wait until 14:42 before a male appeared, clearly back from a hunting trip, hanging over the W part of the Common. He quickly disappeared and then from 14:44-14:46 the pair of Honey-buzzard had a wild bit of mutual circling at moderate height before both coming down close together into the trees. At both sites today would judge that eggs have been laid, but the birds are reluctant to settle down into the mega-secrecy phase. This is a common state: mid-June sees the same behaviour at some sites in Northumberland. But settle down they will!!

Female came out at 11:55 floating; from 11:55-12:05 female in close up aggravation with a Common Buzzard in heavy moult, the Honey-buzzard liked to keep above Common Buzzard and there's a few verbal exchanges and talon waving but no actual contact; further tension between the species at an increased level occurred near end of this spell; the male drifted out to hunt at 12:08 leaving the female to do the nest defence; from 12:25-12:35 female had another spell floating over site attended by a Common Buzzard for part of trip.

Had to wait a little while for action, indeed until 11:07-11:10, when a male Honey-buzzard was seen hanging in the breeze over roughish wood to E of the site, doing a couple of passes in very leisurely fashion. From 11:54-11:58 the female got up, coming out of same area and climbing up on own to moderate height, where she did some steep dives to N of site, before apparently coming down. However, on leaving site at 12:08 she could be seen some way further N floating at moderate height – suspect she was escaping my camera!

Near Starcross, looking up towards Haldon, from 14:35-15:55, had a male Honey-buzzard gliding into the site at 15:30 from S at low altitude with a few flaps to speed progress; he was only in the site a few minutes before he was seen up hanging high to W of site, before moving off further W to feed. Also here, in total of 11 species, had an agitated Common Buzzard calling at 15:37, no doubt in response to the Honey-buzzard's return

Good numbers of raptors were up to the W with 2 Honey-buzzard juveniles up over the Yettington/Hayes Plantation area. At 12:55 these were up over Hayes Plantation with a dark bird floating close to the trees and another bird significantly higher up. At 13:15 a pale juvenile Honey-buzzard was up over Yettington, floating over woodland. From 15:10-15:20 the corvids and gulls were very agitated over Hayes Plantation and eventually at 15:20 picked up a dark juvenile Honey-buzzard sitting in the middle of a large field mobbed by a few corvids. We drove around to Yettington after the walk and could see large rough woodland going into heathland behind. A big pig farm dominated the area, overwhelming the historical interest with nearby Hayes Barton being birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh; we didn't stay long!

Mist was clearing when started watch at 11:45 and was looking keenly up in the sky at this time for raptors starting their daily migration. Did not have to wait long: a juvenile pale-phase Honey-buzzard was spotted underneath the lifting mist at 12:10, arriving from the N and soaring effortlessly right into the bottom of the mist before gliding off quickly SW. They're not easy to see at this height; sis and partner couldn't pick it up at all, emphasising ridiculous application of closed world assumption by some people. Finished observations with no more Honey-buzzard seen. Conditions were ideal for a Channel crossing today by a Honey-buzzard, doing the 140km from Start Point to Brittany on a light N breeze in almost 3 hours at 50km/hour flapping over the sea with light following wind.

As entered sis' estate at 15:15 picked up a male Honey-buzzard gliding at speed towards Bulverton Wood, a known site. He came down in the E area of the wood. Can view some of the wood from sis' patio so watched area over a cup of tea and at 16:02 a female Honey-buzzard was seen flying through the tops of the trees to W, before putting on a major turn of speed moving NW, along the same line her partner had used earlier (9008); last 2 shots are of the wooded habitat. There may be an attraction such as a dung-heap at the end of this line, containing large grubs, or more likely the heathland at Core Hill

On the fields at the back of sis's house an agitated flock of 30 Jackdaw was up: very encouraging as often contain a 'buzzard'. Sure enough after 2 minutes of watching them at 14:23, a juvenile ruddy-phase Honey-buzzard was picked up, floating effortlessly (7204), with a Common Buzzard a little way behind; all over by 14:24. The Honey-buzzard has c4 tail bands with the Common Buzzard having c8. The structure is also different with the Honey-buzzard being lighter and more elongated, compared to the compact Common Buzzard, which also carried a prominent pale breast band. Think that's the equal latest Honey-buzzard in England that I've had: brilliant!!

Had just got my bearings when fastened onto a high-flying raptor, hanging almost stationary with occasional languid flaps in slow hovering mode. It was a male Honey-buzzard, up from 11:22-11:40, hanging over W part of Common, before diving down into wooded area beneath where he'd been hanging. This behaviour is associated with the very end of the display period, when the female is sitting on eggs and the male is advertising high above that this is an occupied site, both to other birds in the area and to any very late migrants. Suspect Clinton Estates own this wooded area.

The Honey-buzzard were in their usual spot (to N) with the male up quite high from 12:50-12:55 doing some butterfly display on his own; the female also came up on her own an hour later from 13:50-13:55, floating around the area before doing many circles low-down around the presumed nest site. The suggestion is that they've just started incubating, maybe the first egg, and have not gone fully into top-secret mode yet.

weather today was warm at 24C with strong sunshine and no wind, and significant dust fall from the Sahara, covering the car. Did manage 50 minutes with the Honey-buzzard and success: a new site, as indicated yesterday, at Southleigh Hills, in East Devon. Habitat is superb with mixture of large woods, meadows and clear-fells, over a considerable area. On arrival at 12:30 found good path giving an overall vista and only had to wait until 12:50 to see a female Honey-buzzard climb high-up in the sky, mobbed by 2 Crow, and hang almost motionless for 10 minutes, presumably right over juniors in the nest below. At 13:10 the male appeared on a long glide, coming right past the female moving NE over the woods, with one photo catching well the cuckoo flight-pose. As is usual in Devon, the nest site is in a wood on the top of a hill, not in a deep valley as in Northumberland; this simply reflects the topology with many hill-tops in Devon covered by mature woods

Weather was very sunny, warm at 23C, dry, light S breeze. So not too surprising that had a pair of Honey-buzzard when at the Church at 11:06 high-up to SSW at 1km-2km distance; they were involved in some lively gliding before the male was left up on his own to do some spectacular butterfly display ending at 11:12 (9007). This is a new site for me. Knightstone Manor has some good Honey-buzzard wooded habitat to E (9007a)
